Packing Essentials I Actually Use
In my last post, I gave some packing tips and said I wouldn’t give you a packing list. Well, this isn’t a comprehensive packing list. But after enough trips, a few items have earned permanent spots in my bag. Every product linked below is something I personally own and use. No affiliate links, no sponsorships - just my honest recommendations.
Travel Adapter
Epicka Universal Travel Adapter
This adapter earns its place by handling multiple countries and offering ports for both USB-A and USB-C cables, so you can charge several devices at once without hunting for outlets. One important caveat: despite the "universal" label, it doesn't work everywhere. Check compatibility for your specific destination before you travel.
Compression socks
SB SOX Lite Compression Socks for Men & Women
I wear compression socks on any flight longer than a few hours - they make a real difference in keeping swelling down when you're sitting for hours on end. I also tuck an extra pair of regular socks into my carry-on, so I can change into something fresh when I land if I can't get into my hotel room right away. It’s a small thing, but it makes a tired travel day feel a little more comfortable.
Extra glasses
I've never actually needed a spare pair of eyeglasses, knock on wood. But the thought of breaking my glasses on a solo trip and not being able to see properly is enough to make me toss a spare pair in my bag every time. Peace of mind is worth the space.
Snap tray
My parents picked up a snap tray for me on a trip years ago, and it's been in my bag ever since. It lies completely flat when unsnapped, but fold up the corners and it instantly becomes a small, sturdy tray. I keep mine on the hotel bedside table to corral jewelry and small electronics - the kind of things that are easy to leave behind when you're rushing to check out.
Nightlight
I recently started packing a small nightlight for hotel bathrooms, because I can't stand turning on a bright light when I wake up in the middle of the night. If you're traveling internationally and want one plugged in the bathroom while your devices charge by the bed, just pack an extra adapter. And don’t forget to grab it before checkout!
Portable electric kettle
I have insomnia, and travel doesn't exactly help. Being able to make a cup of tea before bed has become a non-negotiable for me. This kettle is sized for a single cup and is dual voltage, so it works in both the US and Europe without an issue. I always bring a few tea bags from home, though tea is actually one of the more fun things to pick up while you're traveling.
Earplugs
I like these enough to own two pairs. The Dream model is designed for sleeping - they’re great for when you get unlucky with noisy hotel neighbors. The Experience model lives on my keychain and is my go-to for concerts and loud environments: if you're like me and find them just a bit too loud, these reduce the volume without muffling the sound. Both come with multiple ear tip sizes, which is helpful if standard earplugs never seem to fit.
Reusable bag
I always pack a reusable bag and try to actually remember to bring it out with me - which is the harder part. It cuts down on waste when you're picking up souvenirs or stopping at a grocery store. I like Baggu bags because they're lightweight and take up almost no room in my suitcase
